Final Statement

What part of your project went well?

I think the entire process of the planning for the previous assignment and the actual photoshoot went very well. The idea for the shoot came to me very quickly and I was very pleased with how my final photo set could turn out if I did it how I imagined. I am also pleased with how simple this photoshoot was to set up, with very little equipment and external sources of light required to start shooting. Because of this, the photos themselves did not take long at all to shoot, which was ideal because it was very cold outside.

I am very pleased with how my final photo set turned out. It follows almost perfectly the mood I wanted to portray, and the photos are overall very pleasing to look at.

What did you have to change?

The only thing I really had to change was the angle of the camera for the final shoot. In my sketches, I drew everything from a much higher angle, which made the progression of the footsteps over the course of the 8 photos much easier to see. However, in the final shoot, the angle of the camera was much lower, which ended up not being a big deal at all and didn;t change much.

What did not go well?

The conditions I chose to take my photos in was not the easiest thing to work in. The cold made it hard to set up both of the tripods and positioning the lights, but it worked out well enough because of the short shooting time. Afterwards, retracting the tripods was also difficult because of the frost buildup on the bottom of the legs.

If you could try again, what would you do different?

If I were to retake my photos at some point in the future, I would make sure to have auto focus on and to try to position the camera at a higher angle. I tried setting the focus before shooting which worked for the first few photos, but with more visible in frame, the blur is more noticeable. I should have paid more attention to the focus I had on the photos, but it was very tricky to find the right focus since I could not disturb the untouched snow, as it would ruin the look of the shoot.

Overall, I am very pleased with how my final thematic photo set looks in the end. The photos look very eerie and "haunted", which is exactly what I was going for with my original idea. I really like how the snow diffuses the light from my cheap flashlight in the first 3 pictures. The first pictures with the low-light and high contrast makes it feel like it was taken from a found footage film and I think that is a cool theme or mood for a photo.
